This series is aimed at presenting current methodological and theoretical research in the area of gender studies. It discusses topics such as gender labour markets and social policy, women and families in Costa Rica, and economic development, patriarchy, and intrahousehold dynamics.

"Advances in gender research" is a new series aimed at presenting current methodological and theoretical research in an area of rapid change and with a subject which is interdisciplinary spanning the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences. The papers in volume 1 reflect the current state of gender research in terms of the variety of material and the approach. The authors take various positions within the configuration which include liberal, radical and material feminisms. The pieces also vary in the extent to which the authors' theoretical orientation and ideas about social change are implicit or explicit. The diversity of current gender research is shown in the subjects presented ranging from an examination of the everyday world experienced by poor women and women of colour in American society and post-colonial women on a global basis to research along the critical lines of postmodernism and queer theory. Focus is placed on 'advances' and developments in gender theory. This new series will be of interest to scholars and experts in sociology, anthropology, ethnography, political science and to those with a particular interest in gender studies and race and ethnic relations.

The contributors to this volume, the third in the series, refine ideas that have been part of the conceptual toolkit of gender scholarship from its inception, identifying new challenges to and new applications for the concepts of the public/private dichotomy and of patriarchy.

This analysis of community sociology examines African community issues and patterns of development. Topics covered include: community problems and collective action; community economic development; small communities in transition; ghetto formation and community dynamics; and, heritage and symbolism.

Research in learning and behavioral disabilities, employing a variety of methods and techniques, has provided a wealth of information relevant to practitioners. In order to be of value, however, this research must employ appropriate and rigorous methodology. Recent years have witnessed a variety of new techniques for research synthesis, research design, and data analysis, many of which have been applied to the study of learning and behavioral disabilities. In this volume, a variety of methodological approaches to research is described, applied, and evaluated. Chapters in this volume provide discussions of applications of qualitative research methodology, and techniques for statistical analysis for single subject data. In addition, techniques for structural equation modeling and item response theory are described with specific reference to the study of learning and behavioral disorders, as are techniques for handling missing data. Also discussed are procedures for dealing with specific research problems in areas such as behavioral disorders, school-wide intervention systems, and early reading as well as more general literacy interventions. Finally, methodology for integrative research reviews are described, as well as applications of research synthesis to quantitative research on cognitive processes in mathematics, and to qualitative research in co-teaching. This volume contains chapters authored by internationally recognized experts in the field of learning and behavioral disabilities. This book is intended for interested professionals and practitioners; researchers in learning and behavioral disabilities; and graduate students in psychology, education, and special education, particularly those interested in applications of research methodology in the study of learning and behavioral disabilities. It discusses, applies and evaluates different methodological approaches to learning and behavioral disorder research; has internationally recognized contributors; and serves as a practical reference to educators, researchers, psychologists, professionals and practitioners.

The papers in this volume were presented at three invited sessions at the annual meeting of the Western Economic Association in Lake Tahoe, Nevada on June 30 and July 1, 1998. The comments of the speaker at each of these sessions are also included. The papers focus on the widespread banking and financial crises that have plagued many countries worldwide. A study by the International Monetary Fund (Lindgren, Garcia, & Saal, 1996) reported that banking crises had been experienced by nearly three-quarters of its 180-plus member countries since 1980. And this was before the current problems in Korea and Southeast Asia. Only the African continent, where banking systems are generally quite primitive, appears to have been unaffected. The papers in this volume amplify on the evidence in this area for additional countries; expand the earlier analyses; describe, discuss, and evaluate alternative procedures for resolving bank insolvencies and recapitalizing the banking system, and suggest ways of maintaining bank solvency and preventing reoccurrences of these costly crises. The papers are timely, add considerably to our storehouse of knowledge, and are likely to be of particular value to policy makers, bankers, and fellow researchers.

This book is comprised of essays and research reports for the search for well-founded knowledge that can undergird the collective understanding of ethics and values in the business world. After surveying the research activities of business ethics scholars in this collection of papers, some progress has been made to provide perspective and guidance for the work of professional corporate managers, fresh insights that may lead to new theoretical breakthroughs and an empirical, experience-based foundation of knowledge to guide those who teach present and future corporate leaders.
